Keywords are important in getting to that top most coveted spot in search engine rankings. Yet, before you can actually see your site on the top list, you need to make sure that you have chosen the best keywords there are. Choosing the wrong keywords would only cause you to plummet more in the search engine rankings.]

First thing that you have to consider would be the cost of a keyword. Choosing the appropriate keywords is like making a purchase. Just think of these words as a form of a return investment. The higher the competitiveness of a keyword, the more effort you put into it to make it soar to the top of the rankings. With this said, you would see that a keyword’s worth is partly dependent on how popular it is among websites. Thus it would be a good idea if you search for keywords according to how much they are worth.

Aside from the cost, the possible number of traffic that a keyword could generate is another factor that you should consider. The question now is how you can find out which keywords bring a huge amount of traffic. An approach that you can use would be to utilize keyword research tools such as WordTracker, GoogleAdwords and the likes.

For tools similar to WordTracker, they usually get some criticism of not being too reliable. It is said that some of the data on keywords are not so reliable. Google Adwords on the other hand gets a more positive review.

Once you get a handful of keywords that could most likely give your site a positive ranking, it is now time for you to choose which keywords you should prioritize. First, you have to make use of your gut feel and place yourself in the shoes of prospect clients and think what would be the keywords that people would use in order to get to your site. Then, from this gut feel, also ask your customers what keywords they used to get to your site. Also, keyword suggestion from the keyword research tools and PPC campaign in Google AdWords would also help you have a clearer idea of what keywords to use.
