You need to know which among the many list of things to consider when choosing a shopping cart software you should put in your list of priorities. This will help you have a better guide when you start hunting for the template that you would use for your ecommerce business.

Balancing simplicity and the features that the sopping cart solution offers. This is like the yin-yang for web sites. Always maintain a balance between the two, always making sure that none of the two gets more than the other. Features are around because they make websites more enticing. They can make your website more interesting. However, you need to make sure that you do not overload your site with too much stuff. It will make uploading very difficult especially for computers that are not so high-end and Internet connections that are slow. This is where simplicity comes in. Just choose those features that can actually be of use to your website and your online store. Those that the customers would appreciate and can actually help improve your site.

Check how efficient the customer service and documentation are. There is nothing more troublesome than your shopping cart template going nuts and you do not know what to do with it. Thus, it is very important to have a very reliable support system from your manufacturer’s end. The customer service should be very easy to contact and the response should be immediate. You do not want to feel like a sitting duck when everything starts to look as if they are falling apart.

Making the shopping cart template compliment your online store’s web design. What is more frustrating than purchasing a shopping cart template that you cannot install in your web site? Or, if it can be integrated, you experience a lot of problems? You need to make sure that all the features in your shopping cart software can be viewed properly in your site, like how the thumbnails zoom when the mouse is hovered on it, or how your website can be crawled and indexed by search engines, and the likes.

These are but the basics of the lists that you have to consider when choosing a shopping cart template for your site. Simple as they are, they can make wonders for your online business.

You have always admired WebPages and, though you have your own online business, you really do not know how web pages are actually created or what the essentials are in web creation.

The most basic thing that you have to understand about web pages is how they are created. Web pages, before they become these visual and graphic representations, are actually texts that when combined be represented by certain functional structures. There are different languages that can be used as the texts and each language has its own advantages and disadvantages.

These are some specific things that you need to know when making a webpage.

Graphics and Images. People are visual, that is why it has become a must that web pages should contain graphics. There are a lot of ways how you can obtain graphics and images for your site. You can draw them yourselves using a specific program that would serve such purpose, taking pictures and scanning these pictures to have a soft copy of these pictures, getting still captures from videos, or copy pasting from the web. As for the last option, you have to be careful with the pictures that you get from the net. Make sure you are not infringing copyright laws by using royalty free images and graphics. If you intend to use your own pictures, you would need to have your own digital camera, a graphics editor program and a scanner.

Music and Video. Adding music and video files in your website is also an advantage in making people want to visit your site again and again. Reading usually takes a lot of time and sometimes, people are just too tired to read. Videos and sounds are very good alternatives of reading. In fact, you can place more ideas and can explain complicated structures more effectively in sounds and videos.

Testing. No matter what you prefer, whether you do it when the entire website is finished or you do it every time you finish a part of the website, always do a test of how your website runs or if it runs at all. Sometimes, when testing, better ideas come out and this always leads to further developments for the website.

Hosting Service. You need to choose a hosting service that would guarantee you maximum exposure in the Web. Scrutinize how often the uptime is and what are the terms and conditions regarding downtimes. You have to be very particular about these two thing among others because these will be your gauge as to how exposed your website is in the Internet along with other online businesses.

There are some common mistakes in web designing that both amateurs and professionals commit. For the former, it is out of being new in the business and for the latter it is more of being too familiar with the playing field. That is why it is best that every now and then you get to have a checklist that you can use to tell you whether or not you have crossed the t’s and dotted the i’s.

1st downside. When you do not make sure that you get what your money’s worth is the first of the many common mistakes that people commit not just in web designing or online marketing but also in any form of business. Always make sure that you know what you get for a certain price because you might just end up paying more for less or paying less for lesser.

2nd downside. If you site does not have any means to be ranked because it lacks search terms that people use in looking for sites, then you have a problem. Always make sure that you have a place in your site intended for keywords, descriptions and contents, title tags, and the likes.

3rd downside. One problem that most sites encounter is compatibility. Make sure that your site renders well in any browser that people use. Being incompatible in some browsers could decrease your visibility and your ranking.

4th downside. Difficulty to access because of the use of outdated computer equipment or slow internet connection is always a bother. Once viewers notice that your website is difficult to access, they forget your site readily. This affects your chances of getting good feedback from prospect customers.

5th downside. Having an unreliable web hosting service is a very big problem, especially if customer supports are not readily available and downtime lasts for long periods of time.

6th downside. Slow upload because of heavy graphics turn off customers. They may be nice to look at but not everybody or every Internet connection type can appreciate such heavy designs. Cut low on flash animations and stick to simpler methods. Always put fast access on top of your priority list at all times.

7th downside. Almost all people who ask to have a website made does not understand the difference between license to use and property rights. If not discussed with the web designer properly, the property rights of a website are owned by the website designer while the license to use is owned by the one paid for the website to be made. If you intend to have full ownership of the website, then you have to make it clear with the developer so that things can be properly set.

8th downside. When customers and web developers do not communicate, some after effects of the website design might not be too good on the side of the customer. Customers ask website designers to make their website because customers are not so good when it comes to computer terms. Thus, always have a discussion with the web developer so that he/she could give you advice as to what design is suited for your taste and how much it would cost you to get your desired results. Some web designers cut back on price without telling the customer and this price cut back might be the reason why some of the desired results of the customers are not achieved.

Oscommerce is shopping cart software that can be used in any web server that has installed PHP and MySQL. One of the big advantages that oscommerce has, aside from being free, is its reputation. It has become a trusted shopping cart supported by a lot of people and has been in the business for quite a long time. This combination of support and time are reasons why it is popular among a lot of people and is used by a lot of online stores.

One reason why I started using osCommerce is because it has already received wide patronage giving an impression of reliability. Since it’s an open source, downloadable-for-free software, it’s very suitable for people who are on a tight budget. Being an open-source software, it is also very flexible because there is always room for customization. And, if problems arise, since it is well supported by its developers, I always have people to ask. However, it took me some time to do the customization especially if I do not get any help from developers. Thus, even if it’s for free, since customization is not that easy, I still have to shed some money to hire somebody to customize it for me.

Getting started using OsCommerce is a breeze because of its automatic web browser installation and upgrade procedure. I especially like the fact that I can make quick and easy changes in the layout. On the downside, since there are no templates available and I can only edit the footer, the header and the right and left columns, I do not have much room in design creativity. Thus, if you are looking for software that offers a lot of templates, then I do not recommend osCommerce for you. However, the features of the software come in default in a complete out-of-the-box solution and it has an object oriented backend making changes easy to do. Aside from these, osCommerce widens the range of my possible customers since it’s multi-lingual (English, German and Spanish speaking users) and multi-currency.

As for security, even though it’s an open-source software, I did not have to worry because osCommerce provides a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption for my customers. The downside comes in the administration side. It does not have any built-in password protect for the administration area. I still have to go to the osCommererce site or ask the people responsible for my website to add password protection.

One of the best things I like about osCommerce is that it does its own optimization for my site. It presents catalogs, newsletters, reviews, and features for products related to what I am advertising. Yet, the osCommerce shopping cart is not so effective with large catalogs. If I have more than a hundred products and if I frequently change some information about the products, I would need to modify some elements in the product administration and have modules to manage the data. For catalogs that have thousands of products, some problems in searching and browsing may arise.
